The giant head of the leader of the world proletariat rises on the Sovetov Square in the center of Ulan-Ude. This is the largest sculpture of Lenin's head in the world. It was put in the city in the 70s of the XX century and instantly became a visiting card of the city and at the same time a theme of local folklore.
The monument to Lenin is turned back to the building of the local administration, and the townspeople say that this was preceded by a mystical story. When Lenin's head was fixed, the head of the local city council was thinking about how to put it: face to people or to the power. According to a legend, Lenin appeared to him in a dream and said that he must be put face to the townspeople, sarcastically adding that he would feel all the actions of the administration with the back of his head too. Residents of Ulan-Ude refer to the monument with sympathy and humor. Once the townspeople even offered to sew a fur hat for the head, so that it would not freeze during the severe frosts.
