The metochion of the Solovetsky Monastery appeared in Arkhangelsk in the late 16th — early 17th centuries. This structure was essential to the monastery chiefly for economic purposes. Monks used the building as a warehouse, shop and hotel for monks and pilgrims. A three-domed church in the name of Saints Zosima, Savvaty and German was added to the administrative building in the metochion at the end of the XIX century.
Near the metochion of the Solovetsky Monastery, you can’t fail to notice a mansion built in 1786. According to the design, it was supposed to be a dwelling house, but it has never been used as intended. The mansion housed different offices, banks and customs at various times, and after a major renovation in the 1980s, it housed the «Mansion on the Embankment» Museum which is part of the Art Culture of the Russian North museum complex.
In 1998, «A Portrait in the Old Interior» exhibition was opened in its wonderful new halls. Visitors can look into the hall with portraits, the men’s office of the late XVIII — early XIX centuries, the blue living room of the 1830s, the boudoir of the mid-XIX century and the dining room. The showpieces also include antique furniture, dinnerware sets and porcelain dolls of the XVIII — early XX centuries. The museum regularly hosts concerts. This is an ideal chamber place for those fond of travelling in the XVIII century!
