Memorial Estate of M. Mussorgsky: a Journey into the World of Music

The memorial estate of the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, the author of the world famous operas «Khovanshchina» and «Boris Godunov», is in the house that belonged to his grandfather. During the Soviet era, a secondary school was opened in the house. The museum opened here only in 1968. The house with a mezzanine, an outbuilding, a servants’ quarter and a greenhouse now, too, looks the same as it looked during the composer’s life. Every year, the composer’s works are played here as part of the spring Festival of Russian Music.

The exposition of the Memorial Estate of M. Mussorgsky exhibits the furniture of the Mussorgsky family, a grand piano and other interior items. The interior of the room of the composer’s mother was also reconstructed and the home library was partially preserved. Besides, there is an interesting section here called «The Life of the Peasants of the XIX Century», which is recommended to be visited in an excursion, during which guests are invited to play Russian folk games, participate in fortune-telling, which were always held at Christmas in Russia, listen to folk songs and try baking pancakes in the oven. A separate exhibition in the wing is dedicated to Mussorgsky’s creative work. It tells about the history of the staging of his works. There are call boards, notes, stage costumes and photos of singers, as well as an old gramophone there.
