The name of the Market Square remains logical centuries later, as it still houses the Central Market. Here you can see organic coexistence of medieval and modern buildings. There was a Horned Fortress in place of this square in olden days, and today’s Round Tower is the reminder of that. This is a massive, wide and low oval structure, with walls over three meters in thickness. People always called it the «Fat Catherine». The tower was built in the 16th century to strengthen the city wall and protect it against the enemy.
In the XVIII century, when Vyborg was captured by the troops of Peter the Great, the Round Tower was renamed Peterburgskaya. It was used as an armament depot, as a place for keeping cattle and even as a prison. In the 20-ies of the ХХ century the tower was almost demolished, as it obstructed the facade of the elegant Bank of the Nordic countries. However, it was saved thanks to the opening of a restaurant in it, which has been functioning for almost 100 years! You can see numbers on separate cobblestones which the area is paved with. This is a prototype of parking spaces: the cobblestones designated the areas where traders could park their carts with goods. The trade is still carried on here, but already in a roofed market. This is a Northern Art Nouveau building of the early twentieth century. Above the entrance to the market building you can see a bas-relief with the coat of arms of Vyborg. The old architecture of the square is shaded by «Victoria» International Business Center, a modern building with a glass external elevator.
