The Local History Museum of Astrakhan is one of the branches of the Astrakhan State United Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, which includes 14 departments! The history of this large museum complex began 180 years ago, when the provincial government decided to found a «Provincial Museum». Later it was closed and reopened because of financial problems. In 1911, the numerous collections, accumulated by that time, were placed in a building erected for the needs of the city a while ago.
The Local History Museum of Astrakhan stores more than three hundred thousand rare objects, making up collections dedicated to the matchless Volga nature, history and culture. Some finds have become absolutely unique: the «Gold of the Sarmatians» exposition has aroused great interest in Europe. In the museum you can learn when and who occupied the Astrakhan region, get acquainted with the urban interiors of the XIX century and look at the fish of the Volga-Caspian Basin. It should be noted that the Museum-Reserve includes the museum-excavation «Selitrennoye Gorodishche» in addition to the Local History Museum. This is the place where once the capital of the Golden Horde, the city of Sarai-al-Maqrus stood. A very unique Russian Watermelon Museum is also worth a visit.
