Lenin Square in Pskov is built on the site, where 700 years ago there were heavily waterlogged lands. Gradually, the inhabitants of the city filled this place with earth, and in 1308, at the direction of the city's posadnik (mayor) they paved the place with wood, the remains of which were found during excavations at a depth of twelve meters! So, wide area was formed on the place of swamp, which was quickly loved by peddlers which were selling all kinds of small goods.
The present Lenin Square in ancient times was called Torgovaya. Gradually, it was settled by more and more traders. Here one could find any product he wanted: from firewood to jewelry. Merchants built shops, then fairs, and wide-scale folk festivals were held there. In the 50s of the XX century the square was renamed into the Sovetskaya, and in a few years into the Lenin Square. Today city holidays and political events are held here.
