The bronze Monument to Lenin by Lev Kerbel was installed on Lenin Square in Arkhangelsk in August 1988 and figured in history as the last monument to the leader established in the USSR. The tallest building in the city stands in front of it, at the far end of the square. Its official name is the Construction & Design Building. This 24-storey structure with a metal frame and concrete panels is often called simply a high-riser or skyscraper. It was opened prior to the 1980 Olympic Games. Now it is an office building and the headquarters of local radio stations.
At the intersection between Lenin Square and the skyscraper there is a «Zero Verst» (Kilometre Zero) milestone marker. Since the time of the Emperor Peter the Great, similar markers have been installed near the post office to count distances between the cities. This stele with a spire appeared in Arkhangelsk in 1999. There are inscriptions on the column showing distances from Arkhangelsk to the largest Russian cities.
