The square in the center of Khabarovsk was built at the very end of the XIX century. Prior to this, there was an old cemetery at this place. The first name of the square was given in honor of Emperor Nicholas II – Nikolaevskaya Square. But in 1917 it was renamed into Square of Freedom.
In 1925 a monument to Lenin was erected on the square, but its name was changed only in 1957. The monument to the leader was removed from the center of the square
and placed closer to the edge, next to the tribune for the guests of honor. It still stands there. And the square again took the form of a parade ground. Now it is surrounded on all sides by administrative buildings. There are also eight small and one large fountain there.
