Lenin Square was built in Blagoveshchensk in 1967 near the place where the Cathedral was rising before the fire of 1924. The memorial stone installed in the western corner of the square reminds of it. In 1959 a seven-meter monument to Lenin by the famous Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich was erected here. The granite tribune standing next to the monument was intended for performances by the city leadership during the holidays.
Paved with tiles and surrounded by a park, Lenin Square is the main place for folk festivals and festive processions in the city. In winter they arrange a snow town here and put the highest New Year tree. In summer a large fountain works behind the monument to Lenin. Since the 1970s an oak tree has been growing in the park on the square. The tree was brought from the village Mikhailovskoe, Pskov region, where the estate of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin is located.
