The only Lace Museum in Russia was opened in Vologda in 2010 in a two-story stone estate, the former building of the State Bank on the Kremlyovskaya Square. Vologda lace gained recognition in the early XIX century. It is distinguished by a ladder braid on a thin "lattice". The most popular motive is starlets and snowflakes which are as thin as a spider’s web. A sign work is a tablecloth "Snowflake".
The Vologda Lace Museum displays not only the works by local masters, but also samples of the European lace. The main gallery on the second floor exhibits costumes and textiles with lace, as well as lacework from different eras, including curtains and drapes. The museum hosts master classes, during which you can try hand at lace-making.
