Krasnoyarsk’s Stolby Nature Sanctuary is one of the most interesting natural sights in Siberia and a popular place for outdoor activities of Krasnoyarsk residents. The total area of the sanctuary is huge. But there are restrictions for the access of travelers. The sanctuary is divided into two parts: one is intended for excursions and sports activities, and the other, the so-called "Wild Stolby", is dead and dangerous taiga, where the trek of an average person may be unduly risky. Many travel to Krasnoyarsk in order to see this amazing nature sanctuary, which has been nominated to be on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The "pillars"-picturesque granite cliffs, buttes of fanciful shapes are the hallmark of the famous sanctuary. There are pillars called Ded (grandfather), Biven (tusk), Kitayskaya Stena (Chinese wall), Manskaya Baba and hundreds of other rock formations, steeped in history and legends, amazing and beautiful. Stolby is so dazzling that even half a century ago, a social movement called Stolbism was born there. People in love with Stolby and climbing got united to pass new routes. Gradually, a code of conduct on “the pillars”, folklore, habits and even their own jargon developed among them. They climb "the pillars" without a safety net and expedients; and danger and sport, as is known, bring together and hone their character. It is on "the pillars" that the famous School of Mountaineering and Rock Climbing of Krasnoyarsk was born, which gave Russia a lot of talented athletes. For lovers of trekking and natural beauty, Stolby is a real paradise! Taiga is beautiful at any time of year, but people without sufficient physical fitness are recommended to visit the sanctuary during the summer.
