The Kazan Church is briefly called Red - not only because of the color of the walls, but also because of the beauty of the interior. This Irkutsk temple has one more name: Virgin-Irkutsk Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Laid in 1855, it opened only 37 years later. It's easy to imagine the magnificence of its original interiors, given that the construction was sponsored by the local gold miner Serebryakov and the merchant Demidov.
The Kazan Church, crowned with bells cast in Yaroslavl, could accommodate up to three thousand parishioners and was the most visited in the city up until its closure in 1936. After that, the building was used for the needs of different structures, until it fell into decay. In the 1980s, the authorities decided to start the restoration of the Kazan Church. Today, its most outstanding decoration is a 70-ton granite iconostasis with a height of more than 12 meters.
