The festive red building in the center of Volgograd is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, the main Orthodox church in the city. Its history began in the XVIII century, when the first cathedral of Kazan was built and consecrated on the territory of the fortress of Tsaritsyn. However, the church was shortly after destroyed by fire.
The new cathedral was built in the late XIX century in the eclectic neo-Russian style. The Kazan Cathedral has several domes with golden onion-domed, semi-circular arches, and a lot of symmetric ornaments. The new church was opened to churchmen in 1899 and existed 40 years until the Soviet authorities made the building a bakery. It is noteworthy that even after the October Revolution, the cathedral attracted the faithful at all times. Near it you could always meet pilgrims and soothsayers and God’s fools: the Blessed Martha Tsaritsyno, local saints Adrian, Tatiana, Andrei with a cat on his shoulder and others. This also continued after the church was closed. German soldiers tried to make use of it during the partial occupation in World War II. They opened the church and tried to offer to hold services there. However, none of the local clergy agreed to do it. During the Battle of Stalingrad, the Kazan Cathedral was bombed and it turned into ruins till the end of the war. It was restored in 1948 and since then services haven’t stopped in it.#KazanCathedral
