Katyn Forest near Smolensk is notorious for the tragic events of the 20th century. In 1940, 4,415 Polish officers, who were prisoners of war of the NKVD Kozelsk camp, were shot dead here. In addition, the Katyn Forest contains the gravesite of 6.5 thousand victims of Stalinist purges murdered in the 30s of the XX century. Also here lie the remains of 500 Soviet prisoners of war who were shot by German occupation forces in 1943.
Today the Katyn Memorial Complex is an international monument to the victims of political repressions. There is a museum here where you can learn more about the events that took place in the Katyn Forest, visit the ritual ground, see the Polish and Russian cemeteries, the 10 meters long Orthodox and Catholic crosses and the mock-up of the freight car used to transport the repressed citizens to the concentration camps. Worth a visit is the Church of the Resurrection where you can see the Katyn bell placed below ground level. It serves as a warning to future generations.
