Karl Marx Street in Smolensk is located between Lopatinsky Garden and Lenin Square and is a single architectural monument. It is noteworthy that this street has no odd side, and the whole even side is built up with historical mansions of the late XIX - early XX century, such as the building of a music school of 1906 opened by the nephew of the composer Mikhail Glinka.
Almost every mansion on Karl Marx Street is famous for its renowned dwellers. Thus, a famous military leader Mikhail Tukhachevsky rented an apartment in the house №14 in the 1920s, and Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov stayed in the neighboring mansion in the late 1930s. An unusual apartment building of the mid-XX century, more like a bell tower or a tall tower, soars at the very end of the street, at the intersection with the October Revolution Street. People still live in this house built upon a project not typical for the Soviet period.
