The stone building of the John the Theological Cathedral, erected in Saransk in 1693, is considered to be the oldest in Mordovia. Although over more than three hundred years of history, the construction of the cathedral was completed several times. Thus, in the 18th century side altars appeared at the cathedral, and in the XIX century - a bell tower and a refectory.
John the Theologian Cathedral is interesting because when the churches in the USSR were destroyed everywhere, this one was not touched. Only for about ten years it was closed for the parishioners. In the 30-ies of the XX century there was an archive of the NKVD here. But already in 1944 the church services were resumed. Now this elegantly-rigorous white temple with black heads is considered to be one of the most beautiful ones in Saransk.
