Ivolginsky Datsan located in the suburbs of Ulan-Ude is one of the largest and most significant Buddhist temples in the world. This is a place of pilgrimage of believers, a religious complex, the atmosphere of which is best evidenced by its name in Tibetan: "The wheel of learning, which brings happiness and joy."
The first church on the site of the modern Ivolginsky Datsan was built in 1948. The building permit was given by the Republican Council of People's Commissars. After the Great Patriotic War the government revised its attitude to religion and temples were opened all over the country at that time. Now Tantra, the secrets of Buddhist medicine, ancient painting, writing and the classical philosophy of Buddhism are taught in the educational institutions under the Datsan. The role of the temple especially increased for believers in 2002 when the incorruptible body of the Buddhist ascetic Dashi-Dorzho Itigelov was placed in the Blessed Palace. It is known that this man created more than 50 works on Buddhist philosophy and even predicted the revolution! In 1927 he sat in the lotus pose and ordered his disciples to lead him on his last journey, before that he ordered to bury him and take him out of the grave in 70 years. His order was fulfilled. Itigelov's body was taken out of the grave seven decades later and now he "sits" in the temple-palace of Hambo Lama Itigelov. On certain days it is allowed to look at him and even touch the shrine.
