The Ivanovo Regional Art Museum may boasts of the collection of art objects, which even the capital city’s museums would be proud of. This is one of the largest collections in Russia: 41 thousand units of storage! The collection was formed gradually. After the revolution of 1917 items from the collections of many Ivanovo manufacturers - the Burylins, the Karetnikovs were handed over to the museum, as well as donations from the State Russian Museum in St.Petersburg and the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
Ivanovo Regional Art Museum was opened in 1960 in the building of the former non-classical secondary school built in 1886. In the museum one can see the halls of ancient Egypt and the ancient world, the collection of Western European painting, a huge collection of Russian icons – of the northern and Moscow painting, icons of the "Stroganov" school, made by masters of Palekh and Kholuy. The pride of the collection is Russian painting. To the 50th anniversary of the museum in 2010 the project "XX century. Installation" was implemented. Within the framework of the project, works of 20th century artists Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, cubist painters and representatives of the Russian avant-garde were exhibited.
