Pokrovsky Monastery, originally a male monastery, was founded in 1635 by Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich and completed during tenure of Alexei Mikhailovich. In Soviet times the monastery was closed, the bell tower was blown up, and a recreation park was set up on the site of the monastery cemetery.
In 1994 the Pokrovsky Monastery was revived as a female monastery. Temple of Resurrection was consecrated in the Monastery as well as the three-tier bell tower - a copy of the destroyed one, and the holy spring was restored. The Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God of the XIX century is of a particular interest. Since 1998 the monastery has actually become a place of pilgrimage to the relics of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow. Even during her lifetime Matrona Nikonova was recognized as a saint. She lived very modestly, received forty people a day, healing and helping with advice. A few days before her death she predicted that she would die but she still accepted the sufferers. In 1999 Blessed Matrona of Moscow was ranked as a saint. In the days of the patronal holidays the monastery is visited by up to 50 thousand pilgrims.
