The Immaculate Conception Church is the only Catholic church in Smolensk built in the late 19th century in the style of European Gothic. What is remarkable about this church with pointed towers and lancet windows is that it does not fit into the architectural appearance of ancient Smolensk.
At the time of construction, the church was one of the most impressive buildings in Smolensk. It could hold up to six thousand parishioners at a time. Eye-catching in the church are five altars carved from oak, huge stained-glass windows and an organ. In the 40-ies of the XX century the building of the Immaculate Conception Church housed the NKVD archives and later - the state archive of the Smolensk Region. Now the church is awaiting reconstruction, and the Catholics of Russia expect the soonest transfer of the church to the believers.
