The House of Craftsmen with carved architraves is a museum of folk art and an architectural monument in Kaluga. Here you can admire the embroidery, furniture and clay toys made by the local masters with their own hands, as well as look at the restored interior of the state rooms where peasants used to celebrate weddings and other significant family events.
The House of Craftsmen was built in the first third of the XIX century. Its premises are divided into thematic halls. The "Ceramics" Hall tells about the pottery and hand-made toys in the Kaluga Region. The "Tree" Hall is dedicated to various aspects of everyday life where wood processing was applied: production of barrels, sledges, carts and spinning wheels. The "Weaving" Hall presents all kinds of wickerwork, from bast shoes to furniture. The most "feminine" hall with an exquisite exposition is the "Fabrics" Hall dedicated to needlework: weaving, lacemaking and embroidery. The "Contemporary Applied and Decorative Arts" Hall is filled with products of modern craftsmen of the Kaluga Region. You can not only see all these folk crafts but also try your hand at various master classes, such as willow weaving, pottery and making dolls from cloth.
