The house of the military General, Senator Borshchov, built at the beginning of the XVIII century, is one of the architectural elements that forms the Susaninskaya Square in Kostroma. This building is a strict and beautiful sample of the style of late classicism.
The House of General Borshchov has a complex and unusual fate. The building was badly damaged in the fire of 1847, and its heirs sold it to a wealthy merchant, who restored the mansion and offered the city authorities to buy it out. The city authorities refused to buy and «London» hotel housed the building. Later the house was bought out with the money collected by the residents of the city, and was transferred to the district court. Emperor Nicholas the First, the future Emperor Alexander the Second, the poets Vasily Zhukovsky and Nikolay Nekrasov used to visit the mansion in different periods of time.
