The Holy Trinity Alexander Svirsky Monastery is located in the Leningrad region, near the town of Lodeynoye Pole. Pilgrims come here to touch the shrine — the relics of Saint Alexander Svirsky. It was he who at the end of the XV century founded the monastery on the picturesque shores of the Roschinskoe Lake and the Svyatoe Lake.
Saint Alexander Svirsky was born in 1448 in a small village on the banks of the Svir River. According to a legend, it was on the shore of the Roschinskoe Lake that he had a wonderful vision of the Holy Trinity, and a mysterious voice predicted that he needed to found a monastery on the lake shore. So it happened. In 1647 the monks, who came to the ruined monastery, found an old man’s body in the crypt. It turned out that time had not changed him. This was the first discovery of the relics of Saint Alexander Svirsky. In 1918 the temples of the Holy Trinity Alexander-Svirsky Monastery were destroyed, and the relics were submitted for examination to the Military Medical Academy of St. Petersburg. An article appeared in the newspaper «Pravda» that the imperishable power turned out to be a wax doll. So persecutors of faith in the Soviet era fought with the faithful. And the head of the department of anatomy V.N. Tonkov, who was engaged in the examination of the relics, took a difficult decision: he hid them in the walls of the academy and made people forget about them for a while. Only in 1998 the relics of Saint Alexander Svirsky were found for the second time and returned to the monastery! In addition to the worship of relics, today in the monastery one can also see two complexes — Troitsky (St. Trinity) Complex, where monks live, and Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Complex. A road has been laid between them along the lake.
