The Holy Ascension Cathedral and Its New «Face»

For a long time, the Holy Ascension Cathedral served as the main temple of the city. But in Soviet times it was used as a warehouse. Therefore, after the restoration, the cathedral looked far from its original appearance both inside and outside. Meanwhile, its history dates back to the 16th century. At the site where the cathedral stands now, first Ilyinsky men’s monastery and then a women’s monastery until the beginning of the XVII century stood. It was for the latter that a wooden Ascension Cathedral was built at the end of the 17th century. In 1752, it was replaced by a stone one.
The walls of the stone Holy Ascension Cathedral were painted with scenes from the life of holy saints. The relics of numerous saints have been among the main values of the church. In 1918, the monastery was abolished and the church was made a trading warehouse. After the Great Patriotic War it was made a dwelling house. At the same time, the facades of the church underwent such changes that it was hardly like a temple. Only after 1990 the church reconstruction began. The cathedral acquired a new look and is open to believers.
