History Museum: from ancient people up to the 1917 revolution
History Museum appeared in Vladimir in 1862. Now it occupies the hewn red brick building built in 1906 for a library, archive and museum. The facade is decorated with the colored tiles of the XVII century, and the entrance - porch with a balcony.
In 2003 the exposition of the History Museum was completely renovated. Now it reflects the history of the Vladimir land until February 1917. The unique findings from the early man site of Cro-Magnon are presented, which was discovered by archaeologists at the point where the Sungir River flows into the Klyazma River. The age of the man site is estimated at 30 thousand years. Among the findings is the famous "Sungir horse" - a figure of a horse made of a tusk of a mammoth. By reconstructing the found objects, one can imagine what the ancient people looked like, what they were wearing. There is a hall dedicated to the Vladimir princes Andrey Bogolyubsky and Vsevolod the Big Nest and to the baptism of Rus. A white-stone cross of the 12th century and copies of famous icons are exhibited here. The Mongol-Tatar period is represented by a treasure found in 1993 with crosses, icons and ornaments. Documents, weapons, coins of Peter's time and household items are exhibited on the second floor of the museum. There are materials about a native of Vladimir, a discoverer of Antarctica Admiral Lazarev. The crystal and porcelain of the Nechaev-Maltsov's and Kuznetsov's factories, textiles and icons make up the exposition of the 19th century.
