The world’s only museum of Mikhail Glinka, the Russian composer and the founder of Russian classical music, is located in his family estate, Novospasskoye manor, which is 130 km from Smolensk. This manor with a stone Spaso-Preobrazhensky Church of the XVIII century belonged to the composer's grandfather. Mikhail Glinka was born in 1804, and this is the place where he lived the first 12 years of his life.
Today there is a museum in the restored wooden house of the composer in Novospasskoye. Here you can see a billiard room, a dining room, offices, a living-room and a nursery. The exhibits include the music manuscripts of Glinka, his personal belongings and genuine furniture. A room with canaries, where young Glinka loved to listen to the singing of birds and be inspired by the sounds of nature, has been recreated as remembered by the composer. A large park around the manor has also been restored. There grow centuries-old trees, including oaks planted by Glinka himself, and a giant oak tree under which, as per the legend, the composer created his famous "Ruslan and Lyudmila" poem. Glinka Music Festival is held in the Novospasskoye Manor Park every May and June.
