The monument to the kurai is a fountain with a sculpture of a thin naked boy who plays on a cane flute. Kurai is a national musical Bashkir instrument. The sculpture, called by its author the "Spring Song", was established in 1974, and since then has been the object of good jokes among the townspeople. The saying "Sell everything and buy a kurai", hinting at the nakedness of a boy, is known to every resident of Ufa.
Another story is connected with this monument. There is a legend according to which earlier on the place of the fountain there was a mineral spring. Water from it helped to acquire an unprecedented male power. Therefore, for local youth it is not considered to be shameful to climb into the fountain and touch the boy for the intimate part of the body. They say that this ritual has the same effect as the legendary mineral water.
