Velikiye Luki Fortress —the Age-Mate of the City

The first wooden Velikiye Luki Fortress had been erected in the city by the end of the 12th century. At the end of the XV century, it was replaced by new wooden fortifications. But less than a hundred years later, it was destroyed by the Polish King Stephen Batory. He wanted to build a castle on the conquered territories, and the site of the fortress appeared to be the most suitable place. The new fortifications were built according to Batory’s personal plan. These were walls with a total length of more than a kilometer, with 12 towers and two gates. But this fortress was later destroyed.

Velikiye Luki Fortress in its present form was built in the beginning of the XVIII century at the order of Peter the Great. Inside it there were two churches, a prison and buildings for military needs. During the Great Patriotic War, the fortress became the scene for the offensive operation of the Soviet troops in the city. Now it houses a museum, on the territory of which there is a monument to the T-34 tank, a 26-meter Obelisk of Glory and a platform for launching balloons.
