The Emerald castle from the books of the Russian writer Alexander Volkov could well be in Tomsk. At the very beginning of the twentieth century the future author of the book «The Wizard of the Emerald City», beloved in Russia, studied in Tomsk and forever kept in mind this city, where unusual wooden houses stood among the greenery. Tomsk was then really emerald, as according to the enactment of the city authorities, the pipes, roofs, fences and gates of private houses were painted in bright green or emerald color.
There is still an emerald castle on Belinsky Street in Tomsk. This is a two-storey residential building of bright green color, decorated with wooden Tomsk lace, turrets and bay-windows. It was built by the famous Tomsk architect Khomich at the beginning of the 20th century, has survived to this day and is recognized as an architectural monument of federal significance. The last restoration of the house was made at the beginning of the XXI century.
