Male Danilov Monastery on the right bank of the Moskva River was founded in 1560 by Alexander Nevsky's son Prince Daniil. In the 20s of the last century the ancient monastery was closed, and the NKVD reception center was located there. Approximately at the same time 18 bells were taken from the bell-tower of the Danilov Monastery. The American diplomat Charles Crane saved them from melting. With his assistance the ancient bells were transported across the ocean and installed at Harvard University.
Danilov Monastery revived in 1983. Since that time the sessions of the Holy Synod have been held here. On the territory of the monastery it is worthy to look at the Church of the Holy Fathers of Seven Ecumenical Councils – a remarkable monument of Russian architecture of the XXII- XIX centuries with a complex mixed architecture as well as at the Trinity Cathedral of the XIX century in the Moscow Empire style and the tiered church-bell tower of the Reverend Simeon Stolpnik of XVIII century in a baroque style.
And of course it is important to hear the sound of the 18 bells returned from the USA to the Danilov Monastery in 2008. About a century ago the future Nobel laureate Ivan Bunin enjoyed their ringing in Moscow.
