The Church of the Resurrection, standing on the edge of the Voskresenskaya Mountain, is perhaps the most beautiful church not only in Tomsk but also in Siberia. The mountain itself is named after the first Church of the Resurrection of Christ, set in the stockade during the foundation of the city. In 1789 a stone church was built on the site of repeatedly burnt wooden church. It was being built for almost 20 years on the donations of local residents. In 1858 Mikhail Bakunin, the founder of Russian anarchism, who was serving a penitentiary here, was married in this church. Now the street leading to Voskresenskaya Mountain is named after him.
At the end of the XIX century near the Church of the Resurrection there was a bell tower, built specifically for the Siberian Tsar Bell. It weighed more than a thousand poods (16 640 kg) and cost 18 thousand rubles. During the struggle with the church in the 30s of the XX century the church values were plundered, the wonderful bell was melted down and the bell tower was dismantled. In 1974 the church was declared an architectural monument and they started restoring it. Since 2004 a bell tower with bells has been standing around it.
