The First Church of the Intercession in Vologda was built in the 15th century, but its exact location is unknown. In place of the modern Torgovaya Square there stood the palace of the Tsar Ivan the Terrible, who first came to Vologda in 1545. The Church of the Holy Joachim and Anna was adjacent to the palace. But after the fire in the second half of the XVII century it was rebuilt and given a new name - the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. And the baroque stone church with a tent belfry and a refectory, which stands here now, appeared in the second half of the 18th century.
From 1926 to 1992, the building of the Church of the Intercession on the Torg was occupied first by an archive, then by a warehouse. Now it is a functional church with especially revered icons of the Vologda saints with the relics of Saint Anthony of Vologda and the Blessed Prince Gleb of Vladimir. The mention of Torg in the name of the church refers to the Torgovaya Square between Prospekt Pobedy and Sergey Orlov Street; it was called Kazanskaya in tsarist times. There were ancient rows of shopping stalls and a city market on this place until 1970s.
