A very much beautiful red-brick church of Nicholas the Wonderworker, crowned with gilded domes, was erected in Saransk in the XIX century. However, during the Soviet era the church did not function. It was used as a storage house and show-room for a rare book museum.
The revival of the Church of St. Nicholas (that is how it was called earlier) began in 1990. It was restored and consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The Saransk residents like to come here and admire the strict imposing temple building with a high bell tower and the golden domes gleaming in the sun. Peace reigns inside as the walls of the temple are ancient and "remember" many parishioners and events.
