The Church of St. John the Baptist is the oldest Orthodox church in Volgograd. The first church on the site was founded at the end of the XVI century. However, the wooden building was soon destroyed by fire, and it was decided to build a stone church at its place.
At different times Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and other eminent people attended services in the Church of St. John the Baptist. But in 1932 the church was blown up. Only the foundation survived, which served as a convenient anti-tank fortification for the German occupation troops during the Great Patriotic War. In the 90-ies of the XX century it was decided to restore the Church of St. John the Baptist. In 1995 the construction site was consecrated. But only in 2000 the church was rebuilt and was opened to churchmen. Now, the plain white building with wooden chapel is added by the picture of the Central embankment of Volgograd.
