The Church of St. George the Victorious was erected in the 12th century on the territory of the Staraya Ladoga Fortress. A white-stone single-domed church was built in honor of the victory of the Russian troops over the Swedes on the Voronega River. According to a legend, it was here that Prince Alexander Nevsky prayed with his squad before the battle with the Swedes in 1240. The Church of St. George, one of the oldest ones in Russia, is an architectural monument of federal significance.
The architecture of the Church of St. George refers to the traditions of Byzantine and Novgorod stone architecture. The majestic structure survived in dozens of wars. The temple was restored several times, its facade was modified. As early as the beginning of the 20th century the church was hidden from the eyes to one meter and half under the cultural layer. But thanks to the many years of work of restorers, now everyone sees the church as it was seen during the reign of the princes of Rurik dynasty. The paintings on the inner part of the dome have been preserved almost completely, on the walls — partly, and in the altar there is a unique fresco depicting St. George, which strikes the snake. The image of a snow-white temple on the banks of the full-flowing the Volkhov River makes an indelible impression!
