The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is one of the oldest stone churches in Smolensk. It was built in the XII century. This is one of the few churches of the pre-Mongolian period which has survived to this day.
Throughout its history, the temple was used as a chapel at the prince's court, a monastery church and a Catholic parish. At the end of the last century the Church of St. Michael the Archangel was restored having preserved the architectural details and fragments of the XII century interior. Today you can see fragments of the unique 900-year-old painting on the arches of the church and feel the placatory atmosphere of the ancient Russian church.
