Directions
The Church of Ioann Theologian on a small hill near the Dnieper was built in 1173 in the so-called pre-Mongolian period. In the XII century the vaults of the church were decorated with wonderful paintings. Today, you can see unique fragments of the original frescoes inside the temple, as well as touch the ancient brick walls and cobblestone foundation which have been preserved in their original form.
The Church of Ioann Theologian on Varyag is away from the historical center of Smolensk, hence there prevails an amazing atmosphere of tranquility, silence and spirituality of the ancient prayed-in place. Having visited the temple, it is worth to take a walk to the bank of the Dnieper to complement the impressions by picturesque views of the legendary river.
