The history of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel began at the top of the Karaulnaya Mountain when a guard observation tower was built there. From its top sentries warned the city of approaching invaders. At the beginning of the XIX century there was a wooden chapel here, about the origin of which historians still argue. According to one version, a rich merchant from Krasnoyarsk, L. Novikov, financed the building of the church: he wanted to thank God for his miraculous rescue from the river. According to others, the townspeople built the chapel in gratitude to God for the end of the Tatar raids.
Anyway, the formidable and austere silhouette of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel is now considered one of the symbols not only of Krasnoyarsk, but the whole of Russia: the peaked tower of the church is depicted on the 10-ruble banknote. After the restoration in 1996, the chapel was a bit altered: its walls inside are painted with beautiful frescoes, there is a heating-system, and one of the most beautiful panoramic sites in Krasnoyarsk was created next to it, offering the possibility to admire views of the city and the Yenisei.
