The Central embankment of Volgograd, or the 62nd Army Embankment is, without exaggeration, the face of the city at the Volga. It is where tourists are guided first of all, and a favorite walking area for the townspeople. The Avenue of Heroes connects the embankment with the Square of the Fallen Fighters, and together they form a magnificent ensemble, which year after year reminds generations of the cost of the Victory in World War II.
The walking part of the central embankment consists of two terraces: the upper and lower terraces. The upper promenade is Victory Park, decorated with arches and porticos. In the warmer months the light and music Art Fountain operates in the middle of the park. In summer there are beautiful flower beds and you can go down the stairs to the Volga and the lower terrace. But in late spring you shouldn’t go down there, because during water discharge into the Volga Hydroelectric Station this terrace is completely under water! The embankment’s construction implies temporary flooding, but the scene still turns surreal with booths, rides and beds lost in water...
