Cathedral Square is the historical center of Vladimir and at the same time the point of the beginning of acquaintance with the city. The square has been the center of city life since ancient times. Here meetings were held, and the people's militia was leaving for the war from this place. From the south the Cathedral Square is framed by two small parks – Pushkin Park and Park Lipki. Behind them are the two most famous temples of Vladimir - the Assumption Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius of the 12th century. «Palaty» Cultural Education Centre of the late XVIII century is located between them. In 1958 a monument was erected in front of it in honor of the 850th anniversary of Vladimir - a pyramid with bronze figures of an architect, a warrior and a worker.
The main decoration of the Cathedral Square is the House of Friendship. Red brick two-story building in the style of the Russian house was built in 1907 for the City Duma. The administration occupied it till 1946, and then there was the Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren in the building. After its reconstruction in 2008 the building was renamed the House of Friendship. The city authorities use it for receptions of the high-ranking guests and for holding concerts. A monument to the icon painter Andrei Rublev, whose frescoes still adorn the Assumption Cathedral, was erected near the House of Friendship in 1995.
