Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God: church and relics of St. Varlaam
The Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Chita was built in 2001 and consecrated in 2004. It is built in the classical Vladimir-Suzdal style, characteristic of Russia XIV - XVI centuries. This is the main church of the Trans-Baikal Diocese and, at the same time, one of the largest temples in the East of Russia.
The Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is a five-cupola church with an attached tent bell tower. The soft blue color of the walls in combination with white ornaments and gold domes make an indelible impression. The height of the largest dome is 47 meters. There are 13 bells installed on it, the most powerful of which weighs more than 10 tons! In the temple there is a local shrine - a reliquary with the relics of Saint Varlaam of Chikoy miracle worker. Born near Nizhny Novgorod, the future saint at the age of 36 went on a pilgrimage to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra in Kiev. But he was arrested because of the lack of a passport and exiled to Siberia. After several years of wandering around Siberia he arranged a cell near the village of Urluk. He was gradually joined by other people and together they founded the Chikoy Monastery. Varlaam became hegumen of the monastery. After his death in 1846 various miracles began to be attributed to him. At the end of the XIX century he was recognized as a local saint.
