A stone Baroque Holy Trinity Cathedral with a large golden iconostasis has been the cathedral church of Arkhangelsk since the XVIII century. In 1920, the values from the cathedral were transferred to the Arkhangelsk Provincial Museum, and the cathedral was demolished. In 2005, a new cathedral was built on the Embankment of the Northern Dvina and was named Cathedral of the Archangel Michael in honor of the patron saint of the city. The temple is 65 meters high and can accommodate two thousand parishioners. The five-domed church is built of brick and faced with a white stone. The belfry of the cathedral is decorated with a six-ton bell «Blagovestnik».
In 2010, the Vatican ambassador to Russia presented the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael with a particle of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Patriarch Kirill gave the temple a particle of the relics of the Holy Blessed Matrona of Moscow. There are two small wooden chapels in honor of the Holy Blessed Matrona of Moscow and Archangel Michael on the square in front of the cathedral, next to the Harbor Station.
