One of the main Orthodox churches of Astrakhan is the Cathedral of St. Vladimir, the construction of which was completed in 1902. Built in one of the highest points of the city, between the Russian and Tatar sloboda, the cathedral is remarkable for both its history and impressive appearance.
The construction of the temple, dedicated to the memory of Christianization of Rus’, lasted seven years and was funded by the city residents. The temple was consecrated on the Day of St. Prince Vladimir with the participation of the famous presbyter John of Kronstadt. In 1939, the temple was closed and was returned to believers only 32 years later. Today worship services are conducted in the cathedral, and the melodious ringing of its new bells is heard throughout the city on the Great Feasts. It is an absolute must-visit place for those who love history and appreciate the ancient architecture.
