The Teatralnya Square in the historic center of the city is decorated with the Buryat State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, one of the main sights of Ulan-Ude. This is the pride of the region, since there is no more opera theater of this level in the Far East. The monumental building decorated with massive arches, stucco molding and tracery, was built over 14 years. Its grand opening took place in 1952, and since then the Buryat Opera and Ballet Theater has been deservedly considered one of the best ones in the region.
Classical performances are regularly held here. The local theatrical school is appreciated by connoisseurs of art and culture. Open-air concerts are held on the Teatralnaya Square in summer, and a picturesque light and music fountain in front of the theater entrance is the most romantic place in Ulan-Ude.
