Bogoyavlensky women's Convent appeared in Kostroma almost 600 years ago. It was founded by Nikita Kostromskoy, a disciple of Sergius of Radonezh, the wonderworker and the founder of the largest Russian monasteries. The miraculous Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, the patroness of the city, is kept in the Epiphany Cathedral. Both pilgrims and tourists come here for the sake of worshiping her.
The first buildings in the Bogoyavlensky Covent arose in the XV century. That time it was the men's monastery. Since the XVI century the wooden buildings have been gradually replaced by the stone ones, the monastery grew and prospered. In the same century two women's monasteries – Epiphany Monastery of St. Anastasia and Krestovozdvizhensky Monastery- were assigned to it. After the fire of 1847 the monastery was damaged much. In 1918 the monastery was closed. In the Soviet era the regional archive occupied the premises of the monastery. The novices returned to the monastery only in 1991. Since then it has been rapidly reviving.
