One of the major shrines of Perm Krai, Belogorsky Monastery of St. Nicholas, is located in the village of Kalinino, 100 km away from Perm, at the foot of Belaya Gora (the White Mountain). It was consecrated in memory of the miraculous escape of Tzarevich Nicholas from killers in the Japanese city of Otsu. Several dozens of monks worked in the friary in the late XIX century, and the monastery was popularly called the "Ural Athos" for the rigid practices and extensive prayer rule.
During the Civil War, almost all the clergy of Belogorsky Monastery of St. Nicholas was shot dead, and all the churches and chapels, including the white building of the Holy Cross Cathedral, reminiscent of St. Vladimir’s Cathedral in Kiev, were devastated. A shelter for disabled veterans was placed here after the end of World War II. The restoration of the monastery started later, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, on the initiative of Patriarch Alexy II. Today it is an important religious center and one of the key attractions of Perm Krai.
