The Atsagat (or Kurbinsky) Datsan in the village Atsagat on the bank of the Shuluta River was a major religious center in the XIX century, around which the entire Buddhist culture of the region was concentrated. It is located about an hour drive from Ulan-Ude. The local center of Buryat medicine was especially famous: clergymen-doctors from datsan worked miracles and used to raise the most hopeless patients to their feet. The typography of Tibetan and Mongolian literature and a religious school were also working at the temple.
In 1936 the Soviet authorities decided to liquidate the Atsagat Datsan. A colony for juvenile offenders was organized in its place, and the unique temples and stupas were destroyed. The temple complex was restored in another place, because the landscape has changed over time, and to build a datsan on the bank of the river became impossible due to swampiness of the soil. The new datsan is also built in the village Atsagat, but on the slope of Tamkhityn daba mountain.
