The Ascension Cathedral was built on the site of the wooden Ascension church in 1792 and became the main temple and the soul of Zvenigorod. Rising above the city on the high bank of the Moskva River, the temple was visible from everywhere for many kilometers. The original architectural feature of this cathedral was the division of its internal space into three chapels: the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God, Sanctifier St. Nicholas and the Ascension of the Lord. In 1838 the church was completed with a bell tower, announcing church services and important city events.
The war with the French in 1812 ruined the Ascension Cathedral. After the end of hostilities the iconostasis and the frescoes that adorned the walls of the cathedral were restored. In 1941 the temple was dismantled, and a monument to Stalin was erected in its place. And in 2007 on an ancient foundation a new cathedral was built, different from the old one. It is a four-columned cozy church with five domes. The temple looks very compact outside and surprisingly spacious inside. Every day services are held here. From here one can go for a walk to the nearby city park along the pedestrian bridge that connects the hills above the Moskovskaya Street.
