Andronikov Monastery of the Savior on the left bank of the Yauza River was founded by Metropolitan Alexy in 1357. The stone Cathedral of the Savior built here in the 15th century is almost unchanged today. Today this building is considered to be the oldest Orthodox church in Moscow. Here fragments of frescoes by Andrey Rublev and Daniil Chernyi survived.
In 1918 the Andronikov Monastery was closed. In the Soviet years the churches of the monastery were used as a camp of counterrevolutionaries, a colony for homeless children and a hostel for workers. The revival of the monastery began only after the Great Patriotic War. Today besides the Spassky Cathedral one can see stone walls and towers of the XVII-XVIII centuries, the refectory of the 16th century and the tiered Church of Archangel Michael in the Moscow baroque style.
