One of the oldest monasteries in Siberia Aleksiyevskiy Monastery of the Mother of God is only a year younger than Tomsk. It was founded in 1605. The first buildings of the monastery stood far from the place of foundation of Tomsk and the Cossacks did not manage to protect monks from the attacks of the «Kirghiz». Here all the nomads were called so. In 50 years the monastery was moved to the city, to the Yurt Mountain. At the end of the XVII century the monastery opened the first school in Tomsk and the first hospital. The monastery was also the place of exile for the highest representatives of the clergy and nobles.
The first stone church on the territory of the monastery was consecrated in 1779 and has survived to this day. Snow-white handsome church in the style of the Siberian Baroque is seen in Tomsk from afar. Stone walls of the fence were built in the middle of the XIX century. In 1864 the holy elder Theodore died and was buried near the fence. According to the legend, under the name of St. Theodore of Tomsk Emperor Alexander I was buried here. Members of the royal family used to come here from the capital city many times. But the mystery of Emperor Alexander I — Saint Theodore has not been finally resolved. The monastery suffered greatly in the 30-80s of the 20th century. It was restored literally from ruins. Miraculously in 1995 the relics of St. Theodore of Tomsk were found here. This is one of the main shrines of the monastery. The chapel over the burial place of the saint is also restored.
